The 70/30 rule: say less to learn more

A good structure has one magic property: it takes away the need for you to talk throughout the whole meeting. At NESSE we believe in the 70/30 rule. The employee should be talking 70% of the time. Your job is to provide the structure and ask questions that make them think. That way they take responsibility for the solution, and you stop being the “bottleneck” in your team.

Your toolkit: which model to choose?

Below you will find an overview of proven structures. Each serves a different purpose. Click a model’s name to watch a step-by-step video guide (in Polish).

The architecture of autonomy: ask about decisions

Remember that in the NESSE system feedback is not just about the past. It is about building the future. Instead of asking “What did you do?”, ask: “What decision did you make and why?”.

This question changes everything. It shifts the focus from reporting tasks to the quality of the thinking process. If you correct an employee’s thinking process, next time they will make a better decision on their own – without you.

Your challenge:

Choose one difficult conversation you are planning this week. Look through the table above, watch the short video for the model you choose and stick to the structure. Notice how much less energy the meeting cost you when you didn’t have to improvise.
