Gary Chapman, a well-known psychotherapist and author, formulated the theory of the “five love languages”, which originally referred to relationships, mainly marriages and partnerships. However, the principle has also found application in other spheres of life, including the world of work and team management. According to Chapman, people express and receive love through five different languages:
praise (words of affirmation),
spending time together,
gifts,
help (acts of service)
physical touch.
Let’s look at the general concept of love languages before we explore how it can be applied to managing teams and working with others in a business environment.
Love language no. 1
Praise and recognition as a love language
Praise and recognition are a fundamental love language for many people. For them, words of appreciation, compliments and positive feedback are extremely important for building relationships and a sense of self-worth.
The main elements of praise and recognition are:
Compliments: Compliments are the basis of this love language. Words of appreciation that value someone for their qualities, achievements or effort can be enormously powerful. For example, words such as: “You did a great job on this project” or “You’re incredibly creative” can be very uplifting for someone.
Positive feedback: Expressing positive opinions about another person can be just as important as compliments. This may include appreciating their character, skills or simply the pleasure of their company. For example, saying: “I admire your determination” or “I’m grateful you’re here” can be very uplifting for someone.
Recognising effort: It is also important to appreciate the effort and work someone has put into a task or into achieving a goal. By recognising effort, we confirm the person’s value and commitment. For example, the words: “You can see you really tried” or “I appreciate the effort you put into this task” can be very motivating.
It is worth noting that for people whose primary love language is praise and recognition, such words are hugely important in building relationships and self-worth. Expressing praise and recognition can help build strong bonds and strengthen other people’s self-esteem and sense of self-worth.
Love language no. 2
Spending time together as a love language
Spending time together is one of the key love languages, expressed through shared experiences and sharing time with people close to us. For people whose primary love language is spending time together, it is important to connect and build relationships through shared activities and being together.
The main aspects of spending time together include:
Shared activities: This covers all kinds of joint activities, from walks and cooking together to watching films, reading books and shared hobbies. These moments together allow people to build shared experiences and create memories that connect them.
Conversation and sharing: Another important element of spending time together is talking and sharing thoughts, feelings and experiences. For some people, the quality of a relationship is built through open and honest conversation that allows them to understand each other better.
Building bonds: Spending time together also helps build emotional bonds and strengthen relationships. It is during shared moments that people have the chance to get to know each other better and build trust and a sense of community.
For people whose primary love language is spending time together, the value of these moments is immeasurable. It is during shared activities and conversations that deep and lasting bonds are built, forming the foundation of healthy and harmonious relationships.
Love language no. 3
Gifts, presents, favours and devotion as a love language
Gifts are an important love language, expressed by giving presents, symbolic gestures and signs of attention. It is a way of expressing care, love and appreciation in relationships. It is worth noting that gifts don’t have to be material — often symbolic gestures are the most valuable to the people they are meant for.
Gifts may include:
Material presents: These are obvious examples of giving gifts, which can be material, such as birthday, holiday or anniversary presents. The key to success, however, is not only the gift itself but above all its meaning and the way it is given.
Symbolic gestures: Often gestures that have no specific material value but are symbolic matter most. They may be small tokens, handwritten notes, or even gestures of care and kindness expressed through simple acts, such as making your partner a coffee without being asked.
Signs of attention: Sometimes small signs of attention and gestures can be the most precious gifts. This may be help with everyday chores, listening to the other person with full attention or expressing support in difficult moments. These simple acts can express deep love and care.
Time and attention: One of the most precious gifts we can give someone is our time and attention. Devoting time to moments, conversations or activities that are important to the other person is an expression of true love and care.
It is important to understand that gifts don’t have to be expensive or spectacular to matter as a love language. What really counts for the recipient is the intention and care behind the gesture. Gifts as a love language can build bonds, strengthen relationships and create a feeling of closeness between people.
Love language no. 4
Help and support as a love language
For some people, the primary love language is help and support in difficult situations. Receiving help from others and feeling supported is key for them in building relationships and a sense of emotional security. Help and support can show themselves in many different ways, from practical actions to emotional support.
Help and support can be shown in several forms:
Practical help: Offering practical help with everyday tasks or with achieving specific goals is an important way of expressing love through help. This may include helping to clean the house, looking after children, shopping or home repairs.
Emotional support: Another important aspect of this love language is emotional support in difficult life situations. A person whose primary love language is help and support feels loved and appreciated when they receive emotional support in moments of crisis, sadness or stress.
Motivation and inspiration: Help and support can also take the form of motivating and inspiring someone to achieve goals and overcome difficulties. Words of support, encouragement and positive messages can be very uplifting for people who need support in pursuing their dreams and goals.
Being present: Being there for another person in difficult moments of life is also a form of support and love. Taking the time to listen to someone, give them advice or simply show interest in their problems can be enormous support for them.
For people whose primary love language is help and support, it is important to feel supported and appreciated by others. Expressing love through help and support can build deep emotional bonds and strengthen relationships between people.
Love language no. 5
Physical touch as a love language
Physical touch is one of the most intimate and direct ways of expressing and receiving love. For some people, gestures such as hugs, kisses or cuddles are an important element of building relationships and a sense of closeness. Physical touch can be a powerful form of emotional communication and of expressing care and connection between people.
This love language means:
Hugs: Hugs are one of the most common gestures expressing love and care. A warm, firm hug can express support, comfort and closeness between two people.
Kisses: Kisses are a very intimate way of expressing feelings and love. A kiss on the lips, cheek or forehead can express a deep bond and care for the other person.
Cuddling: Cuddling is a gesture that expresses a sense of security, acceptance and closeness. Being close to another person and wrapping your arms around them can be enormous emotional support for them.
Gentle touches: Even gentle touches, such as holding hands, stroking a cheek or light caresses, can express tenderness, understanding and love.
For people whose primary love language is physical touch, closeness and physical contact are extremely important for building relationships and a sense of closeness. Physical touch can be a powerful way of expressing emotions and care and strengthening bonds between people. It is important, however, to respect the other person’s boundaries and comfort, making sure that touch is always an expression of love and respect.
However, it is important to understand that each person may have a different primary love language. What is an expression of love for one person may go completely unnoticed by another. That is why it is so important to get to know and understand the love language of the people close to us and our life partners.
Using love languages can help build strong and lasting relationships and strengthen bonds between people. By consciously using love languages, we can build healthy and fulfilling relationships in which each side feels loved, appreciated and supported.
So it is worth taking the time to understand yourself and the people close to you, in order to communicate effectively in the love language that is most understandable and important to you.
