Competency First Aid

Your personal trainer

At NESSE we know that developing competencies is a process that requires not only knowledge, but also practice and support in specific situations.

Competency First Aid is your personal trainer on demand – available exactly when you need to practise a tool, prepare for a difficult conversation or gain confidence before an important challenge.

Who is Competency First Aid for?

Participants of NESSE Academies

They get the chance to polish in practice what they learned in the workshops.

Managers and leaders

They have the knowledge but need support to apply it effectively in real life.

People facing a challenge

Sometimes you have to face something new: starting a project, planning a change, a difficult conversation, a presentation. This is the ideal space to gain competencies “right now”.

If you want to develop a competency so you can use it quickly in practice, and you don’t want to pore over books or invest time in long training courses – this is the ideal format for you.

How does it work in practice?

Most often it is a closed WhatsApp chat with a trainer and NESSE’s Programme Director, available for as long as you need it.

Sample areas of support

Communication in management

How do you tell your team something difficult – without a storm?

  • Monika, leader of a 12-person team, has a difficult conversation tomorrow.
  • The project is delayed.
  • The team is overworked.
  • Bonuses are suspended.

During Competency First Aid she practised step by step how to prepare a message that wouldn’t spark a revolt but would mobilise people to act. In a 1:1 session with a trainer she learned to set clear boundaries, express expectations… and listen to people’s concerns.

Result: An action plan instead of frustration, constructive dialogue instead of silence.

Assertiveness training

How do you say NO – without feeling guilty?

  • Tomek, a project manager, had just one problem – he agreed to everything.
  • More tasks.
  • Extra reports.
  • Requests due “yesterday”.

During Competency First Aid he practised with a trainer ready-made phrases that help him refuse firmly but respectfully. He also practised staying calm when someone tries to apply pressure.

Result: Instead of frustration and overtime – clear boundaries and more respect from others.

Negotiation and conflict

How do you put out a conflict before it turns into a fire?

  • Marta, an HR BP, saw growing tension between two key specialists.
  • Results were dropping.
  • Mutual accusations.
  • Blaming others.

In Competency First Aid she prepared a plan for a mediation conversation: how to listen to both sides, how to set boundaries, how to find a compromise that won’t become the next spark. She practised difficult questions and responding to emotions with a trainer.

Result: Agreement instead of escalation, a shared goal instead of who is right.

Leadership and authority

How do you build authority without playing the boss?

  • Basia was promoted to leader of her own team.
  • Yesterday a colleague.
  • Today she has to set requirements and hold others accountable.

In Competency First Aid she worked on setting boundaries and being consistent without becoming rigid. Thanks to feedback and communication training, she began to be seen as a leader, not as “the colleague who got promoted”.

Result: Respect instead of doubt, partnership instead of imposing.

Delegation and motivation

How do you stop doing everything yourself?

  • Arek, a department manager, kept taking on his team’s tasks.
  • Because they can’t do it.
  • Because they have too much on their plate.
  • Because they’re on sick leave.

In Competency First Aid he learned how to delegate so that people want to take responsibility. He practised motivating 1:1 conversations with a trainer and ways of monitoring without micromanaging.

Result: Instead of overload – a team that acts independently.

Presentations and public speaking

How do you keep stage fright from eating you alive – even in front of the board?

  • Ewelina had her first data presentation ahead of her.
  • In front of the board.
  • Difficult information.
  • Little time to get it across.

In Competency First Aid she practised the presentation with a trainer: controlling her voice, body language and difficult questions. She got feedback and tricks for dealing with stress.

Result: Confidence instead of a shaky voice, order instead of chaos.

Change management

How do you introduce change without losing people along the way?

  • Adam had to introduce a new way of working.
  • The team was sceptical.
  • Tired of changes.
  • Resisting.
  • Questioning.

In Competency First Aid he analysed with a trainer how to communicate the change, involve people in the process and reduce resistance. He practised difficult questions and “what if…” scenarios.

Result: Engagement instead of revolt, a plan and a process instead of gossip.

Mental resilience

How do you stop taking everything personally?

  • Agnieszka, a manager for 10 years.
  • Every conversation with employees drained her.
  • After each one she thought “I can’t cope any more”.

In Competency First Aid she learned to recognise the signs of stress and react before emotions take over. She practised techniques for calming tension and building a psychological “safety cushion”.

Result: Instead of burnout – more calm and distance.
